I'll be attending Otakuthon 2016 as an artist this week-end. (Probably the very few Sonic artists in there, lol) If you happen to be around the Montreal event, be sure to say hello!

[Art Process] Shurima Brothers

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 28, 2016, 6:21 PM

Welcome to another Art Process blog entry.
This time, we'll be looking at the evolution of Shurima Brothers, featuring a Nasus and Renekton from League of Legends (also known as LoL).

Laying Down the Idea

I've had this scene in mind for quite a while and reserved it for another drawing, but the idea of creating a LoL picture was given. I originally planned for only Nasus but after reading the lore, I chose to include his brother Renekton. From what I read, unfortunates circumstances turned them into enemies. So why not have another "vs." scene?

The first attempt on the left, while it could have worked, felt too boring. I needed to fiddle with it a bit to get a satisfying result. Thankfully, it didn't take too long to have something I thought was interesting.

Next, by shaping up the sketch to add more details, I can see what I had in mind a lot more better. I had a good feeling about where this would go already.

Visualising the End Result

To get a better feel of the final picture, I block the main colours on the image. I aimed for putting a lot of emphasis on the weapon clash and show the fierce aura battle.

Endless Refining Time

S-5 by sonicolas

It's time to detail~! Here I work on the image rather evenly to see all the shapes of all the little pieces. Doing so will help me notice mistakes early (or late, but still earlier than too late lol).

Of course, there were odd things I didn't notice at first. So I started adjusting them. For example, Nasus's right arm was way too long, so I fixed it my inclining his torso forward a bit, which also fixed the issue I had with his pose. Next, this right let was really big, so I enlarged his upper body.

At this point Nasus was mostly complete.

S-9 by sonicolas S-10 by sonicolas

Time to move on to Renekton. Nothing was really corrected, unlike Nasus. Part of the reason was because the most important part was his head, and the rest of his body was more in the background and to be covered/shadowed/blurred a bit. I didn't really have any idea of what to do with his firey aura until I read his abilities. So I went for a fire tornado that represents his [Slice and Dice] move.

Finishing Touches

Final details and lights everywhere! I started giving the picture a feel of [Fury of the Sands] clashing with [Dominius]. Rocks, bandages, embers and the sort were added to make the picture pretty busy.

All in One!

As always, here is the fun gif animation that summarises this whole process.

-You are not my brother, traitor!

Nasus and Renekton, clashing their weapons, [Fury of the Sands] and [Dominius] chanelled.

I don't play League of Legends, but I love some of the characters in there. Particularly those two.
At first, I didn't know much more than how they looked, but working on a tribute for these two made be dig up the lore around them. It's pretty interesting.

More doujin stuff!
Something I've whipped in a couple of nights.
At first, I didn't plan on doing anything new aside from making more of Sonic Charm Design Set 1, however, with the Puzzle & Dragons anime adaptation Puzzle and Dragons Cross that started this season, it gave me ideas for cute things I could do.
These are the Tamadra - Tamazo and Devi - of what I assume are the main characters, Ace and Lance. Also threw in some orbs that didn't quite work as background. Those little things generated more layers than a typical picture, heh.

[Art Process] Feral Druid of the Claw

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 27, 2016, 11:49 PM

Welcome to another Art Process blog entry.
This time, we'll be looking at the evolution of Feral Druid of the Claw, featuring a Worgen druid from World of Warcraft (also known as WoW).

Laying Down the Idea

The main inspiration comes from the several official art depicting a Worgen, which is essentially a werewolf race, to put it simply.

Worgen Moon Concept by Arsenal21 Curse of the Worgen Issue 1 by NorseChowder

The above pictures were probably my main references in both result feel. Essentially, I wanted something in the night with a full moon in the background.

S-1 by sonicolas S-2 by sonicolas

I attempted to do an upward camera view. I don't think I quite successfully achieved it. At least, in my mind it seemed much more dramatic, haha. Knowing how much I'd drag on trying to achieve something I couldn't, I continued with the attempt.

S-3 by sonicolas

Since the character was going to be a little more detailed than my usual Sonic pictures, I drew line art. It's something I don't normally do; Today, I wouldn't spend time to do line art like this one. However, this picture was started a year ago.

The full outfit, mostly consisting of the Ceremonial Garb set, is something that can be gotten in-game. It can be viewed in a 3-D model viewer at this link over Wowhead, which I used a lot to spot the details.

Next I roughly block all colours. At this stage I usually do not put down anything as detailed as that background. I had to make the steps with what I had in the layers. But you can see here that I had a good idea of the kind of background I wanted: Some pine forest with a view of part of some Gilnean buildings. The spell he's casting is green-ish, similar to the old [Wrath] spell.

Endless Refining Time

S-5 by sonicolas S-6 by sonicolas

After refining the character for a while, I was pretty clear that the pose and proportion are off. Plus, he felt a little too rigid. Much need correction were then added. The arm is now at a much better length and the body is a little hunched with the longer neck.

S-7 by sonicolas

Then I worked for a while on the background and foreground. You'll notice that with the more detailed buildings at the back, I added another Worgen in there. My pine trees changed a bit because I imitated Bob Ross' style back when Twitch/creative launched. After this part, I stopped working on the picture for a year, unsatisfied with the progress. I was likely discouraged by the amount of work needed to make it as good as I envisioned it. I couldn't find any way of making it better.

S-8 by sonicolas

Then I picked it up again recently. Decided to finish it once and for all at it kept haunting me every time I opened my WIP folder. I changed the canvas size to fit a print and arranged things to fit. Almost everything was just re-positioned and/or scaled, except for the pine trees I which I started detailing.

S-9 by sonicolas

Still, something was off. I really could not make it work. So I started messing around with the picture at various degrees. Eventually I decided to take a leap and discard all the hard work I previously did for the background. I was happy and at the same time sad to do it, since it looked better, but a lot of hard work was gone in an instant. The picture was too green/blue so I've offset it by adding a bunch of roses, typically found in their territory. The spell has been changed to look like like [Entangling Roots], or something.

Finishing Touches

And then comes the part where I blur things and do final light adjustments. Also added some fog to match Gilneas climate a bit more.

Bonus!

So, about those houses I discarded? Here is what they looked like close up. I did spend some time on unneeded details like the roof texture. Now you know why I didn't want to discard them so quickly, haha.

All in One!

I'm a software engineer who happens to draw when time is available (or when the urge to do so materializes.. at very bad times more often than not). I'm also very critical of my work, which contributes to the fact that I don't post much of it nowadays. Working to change that, however!

I'm obviously a diehard and long time Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I'm more a fan of his universe and characters than simply the games (although I do find the latter quite enjoyable too). More likely than not, you'll find me drawing characters of this particular franchise.

This doesn't mean that I don't have any other interests. I also happen to be a fan or Rockman EXE and Digimon among other things.
